David may be able to reassure Theodore that nothing would happen to him but he can’t stop the memories from haunting him. The memories that prevented him from stepping foot in a hospital or even be anywhere around anyone with the title ‘doctor’. He just couldn’t handle it without having a panic attack.
All the tests, the pain, the neglect.
He just couldn’t take it.
“ What if….what if you can’t? “
That was a jarring question if David ever heard one and he couldn’t help the slight FLINCH it brought with it . That was probably one of his greatest fears . This camp, his campers … All of that was his LIFE. There were some crazy things that happened here every day, but at the end of it he saw to it that everyone was tucked away safe and sound in their tents . He knew, first hand, the kinds of horrible things that could happen if a counselor couldn’t be there for one of the campers if they NEEDED him .
He dreaded to think of that happening to any of HIS kids .
❝ That’sNOTgonna happen, ❞ David assured him, perhaps a little more forcefully than he meant it to sound . He realized his mistake almost immediately and brought his tone BACK to something a bit more controlled . ❝ I-I mean to say… I’m here to watch out for you,Theo; You andall your camp friends !That’s my whole job.If I couldn’t do that much, I wouldn’t be a very good counselor, now would I ? ❞
